Bald Eagle recovery

May 16 luncheon topic

The story of the Bald Eagle’s recovery from near extinction will be presented at the Men’s Newcomers Club’s May 16 luncheon by Bob Weintraub who ran an award-winning program that played an instrumental role in that recovery.  The meeting will be at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club on Bill Melton Road beginning at 11:30 a.m. with a social half-hour.

By 1980 the number of the American symbol in the 48 contiguous states had reached a critical level and the species was considered seriously endangered. By 2007, with more than 10,000 breeding pairs in those states, the Bald Eagle was no longer considered endangered or threatened.

Weintraub was a public relations counselor in New York when, in 1980, he was asked to develop a program for a new Seagram’s whiskey, Eagle Rare Bourbon.  He created and ran a five-year program that was cited by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service which wrote “Eagle Rare can look back at years of solid accomplishments in a field in which it was the pioneer...”  The U.S. Department of Interior gave Seagram’s its Distinguished Citizen Award, the first time the award was given to a corporation.

Reservations for the luncheon must be made by email to bwesche6@gmail.com or by phone to 904-310-9055 by Saturday, May 11.  Cost is $15 when reservations are made in advance.  The cost of the luncheon will be $20 for those without reservations. The $15 lunch checks can be mailed to the MNC PO Box 16291 Fernandina Beach, FL 32035 to arrive by May 11.  Non-members, attending a meeting for the first time, will be charged $15 and if they join the MNC that day, the $15 luncheon cost will be applied to the membership fee.  Due to the golf club’s capacity, a seat at the luncheon cannot be guaranteed without a reservation.
