Amelia Research & Recovery, a local company involved with commercial salvage of shipwrecks, was on the menu at the Men’s Newcomers Club’s luncheon on Dec. 12, for a record setting 115 member attendance.
AR&R seeks the commercial salvage of historical shipwrecks, primarily sunken Spanish galleons. AR&R believes that the treasure ship San Miguel was lost in the waters off Amelia Island in August of 1715. Gold coins found on the beach and the possible location of two cannon could point to a lost galleon, according to the company.
The company’s specially-outfitted boat, named the Polly-L, can be anchored over a specific ocean site. As such, it has been used for other assignments where a stable ocean platform is required.
