Gene Frenette, sports columnist at The Florida Times Union, was guest speaker at the Men’s Newcomers Club’s luncheon Nov. 15 at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club on Bill Melton Road.

Frenette, a Vermont native, came to Jacksonville in 1981 to cover high school sports after reporting for newspapers in Fort Pierce and West Palm Beach. He later covered other sports and was promoted to columnist in August, 1988. He has a journalism degree from St. Michaels College in Vermont
