Local water issues will be the topic of the Men’s Newcomers Club’s Oct. 15 luncheon which will be hybrid affair with an in person lunch at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club and a simultaneous presentation for at-home members via the GoToMeeting program.
Dr. A. Quinton White Jr., executive director of the Jacksonville Universiity Marine Science Research Institute, will discuss the health of the Nassau County watershed including impact of development pressures on pollution, invasive species, drinking water supplies, salt-water intrusion, fisheries health, reduction in wetlands, habitat destruction and consequences for plant and animal/human life. The Marine Institute houses the St. Johns Riverkeeper, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission Northeastern Fisheries Laboratory, the Millar Wilson Laboratory for Environmental Chemistry and the ocean research program known as OCEARCH.
Dr. White joined the faculty at Jacksonville University in 1976, having completed his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina at the Baruch Institute for Marine Biology and Coastal Research. He has written numerous research and technical papers or reports and received grants and contracts to support marine research at JU. Currently he is conducting research on the history of human impact on the Florida environment and especially on the St. Johns River with a focus on manatees and water quality issues. He writes a monthly column in the Florida Times-Union called “River Life” focusing on river related issues. He serves as a consultant to the City of Jacksonville’s Waterways Commission. He was active in establishing the shark tracking organization OCEARCH.

Members who wish to attend the luncheon can do so by clicking on the “Members in Person Meeting and Lunch” when they register. When the capacity is reached, a waiting list will be created, which will allow members to be confirmed as earlier registrants cancel their registrations. Those preferring to participate virtually should select the “Virtual Meeting Participant” option. There is no cost for this option, which is also available to non-members. Cost to attend the golf club luncheon is the usual $15 which can be paid by credit card when registering (click “Pay online”), or by clicking on “Invoice me” and sending a check to MNC PO Box 16291, Fernandina Beach, FL 32035 to arrive by October 10. Given the 50 person limit for in-person attendance, members’ registrations not paid by then will be cancelled to make room for wait-listed members.
