Nassau to grow by 36% by 2030, mostly in Yulee

County Manager Pope tells MNC at December meeting

Taco Pope, Nassau County Manager

Nassau County’s population is expected to grow by 36 percent in the next ten years reported County Manager Taco Pope in his presentation to the Men’s Newcomers Club luncheon meeting Dec. 17.  For each of the next ten years 1200 residential units are planned for the county with about three-fourths of them in Yulee, he said.  Amelia Island population is expected to increase by three percent, Pope explained.

Pope led a team consisting of Megan Diehl, director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Holly Coyle, assistant director of Planning, at the club’s monthly meeting at which some members attended the luncheon at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club while others participated virtually through the Internet.

Pope said Nassau would be the seventh-fastest growing county in Florida by 2030.  As a result one of the critical issues the county is facing is recreational facilities.  Coyle pointed out the county is failing to meet levels of service required by the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.  The county is seeking to hire a director for the Parks and Recreation Department, she said, and is planning to acquire land.

Another concern, she said, was the type of congestion seen in Clay County’s Orange Park.  To deal with this issue, the county is identifying specific areas (“nodes”) in which to concentrate commercial development as well as to limit access along major highways.

Coyle pointed out the county is also working to identify county-owned properties to put into conservation with an emphasis on wildlife habitat and land subject to flooding by rising sea levels.  Anyone can recommend land that should be designated conservation, she said.

Other issues the county is considering, according to Pope, is the improvement of public areas and moving power lines underground to improve the development of trees.
