Whale Ambassadors to discuss
Right whales at Oct. 17 MNC luncheon

Scott Rowley, authority on right whales and a member of the Amelia Island Whale Ambassadors Association (AIWA), will be guest speaker at the Men’s Newcomers Club luncheon Thursday, Oct. 17, 11:30 a.m., at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club on Bill Melton Road.

Rowley serves on the board of AIWA. He was a professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine who retired to Amelia Island in 2022 after a 40+ year career in cancer research. He is a lifetime member of the Sierra Club and Appalachian Mountain Club, a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and volunteers locally with Invader Raiders and Friends of Fort Clinch.

Scott will lead a discussion regarding the right whales that winter in the waters off Amelia Island, including:

The annual migration of right whales between their feeding grounds in the North
Atlantic and the calving grounds of Northeast Florida,
The critical nature of this endangered population and the causes of whale mortality,
Reasons for hope that the population will rebound, and
What we can do to improve whale survival.

There will be a social half-hour beginning at 11:30 a.m. followed by a buffet lunch at noon. Our luncheons are open to members who may also register one male guest, and to non-member men who are considering joining the club.

The Club expects all attendees to be fully vaccinated from COVID 19.

To register for the meeting, click on the register box nearby. The Club has a capacity of 100 for lunch. Once registrations have reached that limit, a waiting list will be maintained.

Cost to attend the golf club luncheon is $23 which can be paid by credit card when registering (click “Pay online”), or by clicking on “Invoice me” and sending a check to MNC PO Box 16291, Fernandina Beach, FL 32035 to arrive by Oct. 12. Given the 100-person limit for in-person attendance, members’ registrations not paid by then will be cancelled to make room for waitlisted members.
